Jim MacLeod
Jim's parents were born in Maritime Canada. Jim was born in the United States, but heard fiddle music all his life. He is the president of the Canadian-American Club, located in Watertown Ma. He is a frequent visitor to the Maritime provinces of Canada, and if you mention a musician to him, he will probably tell you an anecdote about that person, from either personal experience or from stories he heard from home.
The Maritime Provinces, are a region of Canada on the Atlantic coast, consisting of New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. The Maritimes are located northeast of New England.
New Brunswick
New Brunswick (French: Nouveau-Brunswick) is the only officially bilingual province (French and English).The 1969 Official Languages Act made French an official language, on par with English. New Brunswick's capital is Fredericton. The population is majority English-speaking but with a substantial (35%) French-speaking minority Acadians from Acadia, from the former name of this region during the French colonial period. The the province's population in 2005 is 758 000 (New Brunswickers).
New Brunswick was one of the four original provinces of Canada. The aboriginal nations of New Brunswick include the Mi'kmaq (Micmac), Maliseet and Passamaquoddy. The first known European exploration of present-day New Brunswick was by French explorer Jacques Cartier in 1534. the Provincial flower is the Purple violet. The

(French, Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador, Irish: Talamh an Éisc, Latin: Terra Nova) was the tenth province to join the Canadian confederation. Newfoundland has a number of historical firsts. The oldest known settlement anywhere in The Americas built by Europeans is located at L'Anse aux Meadows, Newfoundland. It was founded circa 1000 A.D. by Leif Ericson's Vikings. Remnants and artifacts of the occupation can still be seen at L'Anse aux Meadows.
Geographically, the province consists of the island of Newfoundland and the mainland Labrador, on Canada's Atlantic coast. On entry into Canada in 1949, the entire province was known as Newfoundland, and this name is still used informally.
In December 2001, an amendment was made to the Constitution of Canada to change the province's official name to "Newfoundland and Labrador". The province's population is 533,800. People from Newfoundland are called "Newfoundlanders", while people from Labrador are called "Labradorians". Newfoundland has its own dialect of English. Newfoundland French is nearextinction as is Newfoundland Irish.

Nova Scotia (Latin for New Scotland; Gaelic:Alba Nuadh; French: Nouvelle- Écosse;) is a Canadian province on the North Atlantic coast. Nova Scotia has an area of 55,284 km² and a population of just under 937,000 (Nova Scotians). Nova Scotia is the seventh most populated province in Canada. Its capital is Halifax.
Paleo-Indians camped at locations in present-day Nova Scotia approximately 11,000 years ago. The explorer John Cabot visited present-day Cape Breton in 1497. The first European settlement in Nova Scotia was the first capital for the colony Acadia at Port Royal in 1605. Nova Scotia was the first Province in Canada to vie for independence from Canada in 1868.
The Bluenose, which appears on the back of the Canadian ten-cent piece (dime) and current Nova Scotia license plate was built in Lunenburg, a town on the South Shore.
Prince Edward Island (PEI; French, l'Île-du-Prince-Édouard) is a Canadian province located in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, east of New Brunswick and north of Nova Scotia from which it is separated by the Northumberland Strait. It is the nation's smallest province in terms of both size and population. The population of PEI, is 137,800. People from Prince Edward Island are called Prince Edward Islanders (or colloquially just Islanders).Known as the "Garden Province", its capital and largest city is Charlottetown, situated centrally on the island's southern shore. Prince Edward Island was originally inhabited by the Mi'kmaq people. They named the island Abegweit, meaning Cradle on the Waves. In 1798, Great Britain changed the colony's name from St. John's Island to Prince Edward Island to distinguish it from similar names in the Atlantic area.
